Word from Bob Howald of Valley Cheese and Wine- The Best Wine and Cheese Shop in the Valley- that they are open late Friday October 7th and giving lucky clients a chance to try out some great Spanish Olive Oil and Wine.
I’ve been to a number of these and they are always interesting, informative and great!
John Cancilla from Marques de Valdueza will be here tasting and talking about the wine and vineyards and the olive groves and olive oils from Bodega y Almazara. This family estate “Perales de Miraflores” is near Merida, which was one of the farthermost provinces of the Roman Empire. In addition to strategic reasons, the Romans sought sites for their cities suitable for cultivating vines and olives. This oil has more than two thousand years of unbroken tradition behind it. There are four kinds of olive trees whose fruit is blended to make this olive oil. Hojiblanca and Picual are standard varietals from southern Spain-the former brings a soft, warm, nutty butteriness, while the latter offers hints of artichoke, green asparagus, a bit of earthiness and a touch of black pepper in the finish. Arbequina, another common olive in Spain, adds a round, soft flavor. Most interesting are the Morisca olives, unique to the area, offering a bit of pepper and interesting apricot fruit with a touch of green grass and green tomato.
We will be tasting olive oils from their entry level Merula and their Marques de Valdueza oil. We will also be tasting oil from different vintages to compare the stability of the oils over time. Very interesting stuff.
We will be tasting some great Spanish wines as well!
Cava’s yet to be named but certainly delicious.
