Eero Aarnio has been producing iconic designs for (gulp) as long as I have been alive. Working primarily with innovative materials initially, Aarnio produced a rapid fire sequence of classics in fiberglass, including the Ball Chair, Bubble Chair, and Pastil Chair (all, incidentally, originals available from UNICAHOME).

Alessi recently added Aarnio to their designer stables. What is interesting about this is that Aarnio’s focus for many years has been on furniture. This is the first time in recent memory that he has designed accessories. The introduction of the line includes utilitarian objects for the kitchen: a bottle opener, a mortar and pestle, and a juicer, as well as a watering can. Part of the A de Alessi line, the series is reasonably priced and affordable.

According to the designer: “I remember the smile on Alberto Alessi’s face when I presented my first drawings to him. I approach product design from two different angles: firstly, from a study of the possibilities that new materials bring to the design process and secondly, through creativity based solely on feelings, which in turn brings you closer to art and endless possibilities. When these two approached are combined, new and surprising products can emerge.”
