We were very excited to be able to represent a design from Sir Terence Conran. Conran was an early and lasting influence on what is now known as Unicahome. In fact, my early trips to England back when I was dabbling in archaeology always involved tracking down Conran’s various business ventures, from retail to restaurants. Not convinced? Do a bit of research on Habitat (his store) and the early designs of Sir Terence. Need more? His Soup Kitchen restaurant, while simple in concept (the best ideas are usually simple), revolutionized eating in Britain. (Okay, that may be a bit strong, but he was WAY ahead of the curve, opening over a half century ago). Conran also did an incredible job on the Michelin building, which he turned into a Conran Shop and the famous Bibendum restaurant. A similar idea was done at Bluebird Garage, and a Conran Shop (failed; now languishing in the basement at ABC Carpet and Home) at the 59th Street Bridge in NYC. Seek out his (sort of) autobiography (now out of print, I think) where he discusses his failures as well as his successes.
The Conran Shop, unfortunately, pales significantly with his earlier retail outings, in my opinion. Why? Because it isn’t simple, conceptually, and “good” design has become expensive- although his display concepts are still grand. Conran was at his best finding affordable and good design- and designing and manufacturing product to fill a need when necessary.
A brilliant man, Conran has continually championed better product (and food) for people, staying far away from the perpetual snobbery that plagues the design (and food) industry. He has written and been involved in published numerous books on design and better design. Hunt them down.
The nice bowl is made of double walled 18/10 polished stainless steel. Excellent as a decorative accessory, the bowl can easily be used as a classic ice bucket or fruit bowl. 3.75″h x 8″ dia.
Now ain’t that a nice bowl?
Available at UNICAHOME, of course.
Methinks Sir Terence has a bit of the Bibendum (Michelin‘s Icon) dude on his mind:
Thumbs up for Sir Terence!
