Classic Barware Re-Introductions from Alessi of Italy

There was a trend a few years ago where many companies simply looked in their archives and came out with ‘classics’ for a more than willing public eager to snap them up (think Eames, Panton, Nelson, Cherner, Wright etc). Most of the reasoning was that there was simply a demand for the long out of production designs that had become so collectible that they hit the price level of an ounce of unobtainium. Reintroduce the designs, manufacture them in Poland, or China, or somewhere else other than the good ol’ USA, and you have a hit (however shortlived).

We thought this trend was extremely boring.

Recently, however, Alessi went back into their archives and revived some designs that don’t have the panache of some famous designer. You see, pre-1980 Alessi made good quality product. Period. No fancy designer tag. Just good quality product. And that is what this re-introduction involves.

Unicahome has been following a number of trends in the last few years. If you glance at the Unicaworld blog content, you probably have a clue. One of the trends we have been following (thirstily) is mixology. So we were very pleased to see Alessi re-introduce some classic designs that more than likely pre-date 1950. Why the re-introductions? We don’t know. There is definitely a trend towards better cocktails worldwide, but that doesn’t exactly explain it. Alessi hasn’t really entered their archives this extensively for decades. Carlo Alessi, who designed many of these re-introductions, passed fairly recently, so this may be an homage by the family. Whatever the case, these designs bring back days of elegance with quality, long before designers became household names.

So put down your cosmos, vodka whatevers, and long island iced teas and let’s get back to some serious entertaining, with panache.
