SOUVENIRS OF THE RECESSION

Souvenirs of the Recession

Souvenirs of the recession is a collection of miniature buildings that were commissioned, but cancelled due to the effects of the worldwide recession.  The collection includes the Busan Lotte  Tower, which was to be 107 stories and 1674 feet tall; The Cheesegrater Tower by Richard Rogers, which at 48 stories and 747  feet tall, was scheduled to be the tallest building in London.  56  Leonard Street was schedule to be built in New York City.  Designed by Herzog and De Meuron, it would top out at 796 feet.  The Burj Al Alam Tower in Dubai is 108 stories, and designed to resemble a  flower.  It is permanently on hold as of 8/09.  The last building in  the series is the Russia Tower, with 5.5 million square feet, 118  floors and 2009 feet, which was designed by Foster and Partners.

The Souvenirs of the Recession Series is almost a continuation of their Lost Buildings collection, a group of historical buildings that have been lost to modernization, economics or progress.  Their Buildings of Disaster series depicts in miniature buildings where unfortunate incidents have taken place, which become tourist attractions because of the events that occurred there. Perhaps this continuation is ironic that these buildings may, in fact, not be missed. Perhaps nostalgia, perhaps serious, perhaps fluff and ego, perhaps it is better that some of these remained as blueprints….

TIMELESS OBJECTS

Timeless Objects

The Timeless Objects series is a response to the design industry’s “consumer suffocation” from having so many product variations in the marketplace. They have reduced functional product to a basic series of elements and enshrined them in a special material, taking objects with no discernable style and elevating them to a bronze-like appearance. There is a Giorgio Morandi quality to the end product in grouping- yet the items are still functional within their shrines.
