I Mediani Art Glass Series by Moretti

One of the overlooked aspects of art glass design is that it is very much a collaborative effort. A great glass artist will often draw out ideas on paper from which the blower and gaffer work while they are at the furnace. The sketch places emphasis on the form, color combination, and technique. The final product is a result of the glass master blower’s interpretation and skill.

Recently Mr. Giovanni Moretti sent us a number of images of his drawings for the new I Mediani series of vases. The series delves into the methods of hot glass manipulation and decoration. Unlike other series by Moretti, the Mediani are being sold as a complete set of 15 vases. The vases are ~10.5″ each and are a limited, signed edition series of 222 worldwide.

The drawings reminded me of some of the more beautiful fashion sketches by Valentino and the like, where there is a form, augmentation of that form (clothing) and suggested coloration. The idea is present in two dimensions; the reality remains to be fleshed out through creative interpretation.

The Moretti glass works was founded by Carlo and Giovanni Moretti on the island of Murano. It is one of the last artisan factories remaining on the island. The world lost Carlo on the 50th anniversary of the founding; his brother Giovanni continues designing and promoting the Vetri Murano branding, as well as serving as the President of the Venice Glass Consortium for several years.
