We’ve been big fans of the Carlo Moretti glassworks for quite some time. Still family owned, the glassworks keeps the design and artistic aspect of Murano glass alive and well on the island.
Bora glassware is one of the projects that most glass companies would not dare touch. Why? Because it is based on artisan production and not mass production. Bottom line is king in mass production. Other variables are more important with artisan production. So each year for the past six or so years, Mr. Moretti sits down and designs a number of pieces for the Bora, while other companies calmly design machine-produced glass in factory settings.
Some bora years’ designs clearly show an influence on technique, others on color. The main tenet is that all pieces are unique, small batch production, and made to order. The client can therefore choose specific pieces to use- ones they enjoy the most. The weight/heft is great, and the size (4″h x 3.7″dia approx) fits the palm nicely for a rocks or whisky glass.
The glassware is named after the strong gusts of wind (bora) that blow through the region. The bora glassware is therefore designed in an oval (rather than typical cylindrical form), perhaps to represent distortion by the wind, but also to allow a firmer grasp on the glass.
The glasses are not inexpensive, however. Handmade quality and artisanship cost money, but for the proper person this is something that can be enjoyed for a lifetime- every time they sit down for a nice dram or two with a guest or alone.
