The Carlo Moretti glassworks was founded in 1958 by brothers Carlo and Giovanni Moretti. The island of Murano (near Venice, Italy) has a history of glass manufacturing for over 700 years. The glassblowing tradition is handed down through the generations, with family names such as Moretti, Barovier, Toso, Salviati and Venini becoming known worldwide over the last century.

Much of the glasswork on Murano is influenced by the beauty of the Venetian lagoons and the history of Venice.

Moretti’s Bora series, for example, are assymetrical- not only due to being handmade, but also part of the design process, portraying objects being ‘blown’ by the strong, cold bora wind (which can reach upwards of 60 MPH).
The Moretti glassworks quickly built a name for themselves in the United States by producing functional household glass. During the 1960′s the firm produced product for Bloomingdale’s- primarily stemware with color and lattimo (milk glass) casings. Towards the end of the decade the firm began to produce satin colored glass for Rosenthal Netter. The production from the 1960′s was extremely popular, and pieces are available in the collectible market (a search on EBAY will find numerous pieces).
In the 1970s the firm began to switch over to more artisan production in crystal. A series of glassware patterns named for their form became extremely popular due to the quality of design and production. Lines such as Ottagonale and Ovale are considered classics of design and are still in production today.
In 1990 the firm continued their dedication to preserving the artisan craft of Murano by introducing annual, limited and signed collections. This allowed Moretti to increase their legions of avid collectors, but it also enabled the firm to produce pieces which showcased many of the technical aspects of glass production. Introductions such as the I Diversi, the Bora, and Calici are stemware that are functional yet beautiful for daily display in the household. Along with the glassware came the introduction of glass vases and sculptures utilizing difficult Murano techniques.
The late 20th Century brought numerous changes to the glassworks of Murano. Firms were purchased by conglomerates which have more profit motive than passion. Some firms, such as Salviati, were purchased and sold a few times, only to disappear altogether. Carlo Moretti recently passed away. The tradition continues, however, and the Carlo Moretti name remains firmly committed to continuing the tradition of design and artisanship on the island.
