I was very pleased to find these glasses back on the market on a recent trip to Paris. Mr. Newson, who is one of the most iconic designers of the turn of the century, designed these back in 1998.
Newson is fairly serious about his designs, and the prices for his early work has gone over the million dollar mark. That piece, the Lockheed Lounge, was based upon aircraft design. A topic that Newson has re-visited throughout his career, Newson has designed everything from aircraft interiors (for Quantas and private individuals) to full-blown aircraft such as the Kelvin 40 (for Fondation Cartier) and EADS Atrium Space Jet.
The Newson Glassware design stems from his designs for aircraft interiors. The glasses are similar in form and vary only in height. This is due to an emphasis on a large flat bottom that allows more stability for use during flight- or at home. Additional volume for liquids is provided by a greater height.
For those of you collectors out there, the new introduction is machine-made; the earlier version feature a hand finished top. Starting at $40/set of 2.
