Paul Smith Adds a Splash of Color to Stelton

Sir Paul Smith is one of the UK’s leading fashion designers. From his origins on Savile Row, Sir Paul has built a fashion empire shown in leading retail and flagship stores worldwide. Known for his neo-traditionalism, his designs tend to update stodgy classics with well-chosen color details.

Stelton of Denmark recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Known primarily for greyscale brushed stainless accessory production, the firm’s most famous product was a series of tea, coffee, and barware items based on a simple cylinder form. Known as cylinda-line, the line was designed by architect Arne Jacobsen, and was the recipient of the design award in 1967.

Sir Paul adds his own flair to the Cylinda Line series in the AddColour series- adding a touch of color to the traditionally black bakelite handles. Not just color- a range of colors, in three motifs: bright, pastel and muted.

Paul Smith is also known as a lifestyle brand, and in a second variation of the cylinda-line form he has introduced Statement. The Statement series is titanium coated stainless steel which has been engraved with quotes from Sir Paul involving the high life and how to live it. Beautiful and thought-provoking (presumably), the Statement collection is the bar set for those of you who like to relax with a cocktail in the afternoon or evening. Cool enough to be on display but utilitarian enough to be used with friends and family- a basic tenet of the Paul Smith design rules.

Finally, Sir Paul was permitted to add his own flair to the Stelton collection. He did so by introducing DOTS. Once again using a cylindrical form, the DOT collection is a series of nine colorway collections- each with 6 different colors (3 bowls and 3 bowls with lids). The result is not a splash of color, but a statement, beautiful enough for display or general use. The DOTs would also be quite cool on a desktop.
