Sedia 1 chair by Enzo Mari for Artek

Originally designed by Enzo Mari in 1974, the autoprogettazione project was an attempt by Mari to move a consumer away from mass production. Arming the reader with only plans, the idea was that Mari’s designs could be produced with just a hammer and basic materials. Perhaps this was an early example of local consumerism- more than likely this was an attempt at reducing design to the simple basic concepts of material, design, and manufacturing- all by the end consumer.
Recently Artek of Finland has placed into production Sedia 1. Sedia 1 arrives as a kit- complete with plans and materials. The chair is available here.

Also available: Autoprogettazione? book (currently sold out; accepting backorders). The title contains designs and examples from the series, as well as a collection of articles and interviews following the exhibition. Mari says in the second edition, ” In 1974 I thought that if people were encouraged to build a table with their own hands, for example, they would be able to understand the thinking behind it.”
A few years ago there was a 1:5 kit version of the P (now Sedia 1) chair which was framed and signed by Mari; the series of 100 sold out quickly (image Unicahome archives).
