Unicahome and Disney World’s Epcot Center House of Tomorrow Innoventions

A number of years ago Unicahome worked with Disney on the Epcot Center’s House of Tomorrow at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
The House of Tomorrow is a concept that Disney dating back to the 1950′s with Monstanto’s House of the Future. The overall idea is to present the newest innovations, gadgets, and concepts in a walk-through setting for the public. We thought it was a good idea to get involved- the prospect of presenting product that had little exposure to the American public was right up our alley.
At the time of the House of Tomorrow’s development most of the product we donated was rarely seen outside of the major metropolitan areas of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Working closely with our vendors, Zanotta, Vitra, Resolute, Fornasetti, and others, the display presented some of the most interesting and innovative products available at that time.
The House of Tomorrow has finally found its tomorrow and was recently closed for renovations. (Another House of Tomorrow is evidently open at Disneyland.) Unicahome has some of their display available on their floor in their showroom for purchase. Some of the pieces, such as the Easy Edges series by Frank Gehry, are now out of production.

We would like to thank Disney in allowing us to participate in this presentation. Here at Unicahome we feel that design is for everyone- not just the restricted few. An iPhone is surely as modern as a Ron Arad sofa. It is something to be used and not sit gathering dust in some museum. Suitable context in presentation to the general public is the first step to widespread acceptance of the best our generation has to offer.
