The best ideas are generally the ones you wish you had thought of. Add a bit of elegance and nuance and you get something that is a game changer. Think of Steve Jobs trying to make a more attractive computer or a warmer portable tablet PC. Or the dude (or dudette) that invented the wheel.
Silicone is a wonderful substance. Other than the more traditional Las Vegas ideal, Silicone has a plethora of uses. I can rattle off a whole bunch of pluses: inert, low thermal conduction, hydrophobic, microbes hate it, can be easily molded, UV resistant, easy to clean, etc etc. Basically the only thing silicone hates is a sharp knife.
Over the past few years Silcone has quietly been creeping into the world of foodies and cooking. Cool, pliable, and colorful silicone has been changing the form of trivets and pot holders, making really interesting molds for cooking and freezing, and changing most of our cooking utensils to non-scratching items that you merely throw into the dishwasher to get cleaned.
Enter Nao Tamura, a Japanese-born designer, who has developed a series of leaf-shaped silicone plates. The nuance is the hand-finishing, which gives the leaf a naturalistic look. Stackable, Rollable, and everything else-able, the leaves have a tremendous amount of possibilities. Dinner becomes a triumph; dessert becomes a finish with fireworks. Throw it in the oven to reheat; serve a bit of yuzu ice cream au naturel.
