A Few of My Favorite Things: Module 2 Whisky Barware by Thomas Jenkins

Once in a while I find something that intrigues me and makes me undeniably happy at the same time.

I’m a bourbon drinker, and I’m completely unapologetic for that fact. I’ve tried all sorts of Scotch, but I still love my bourbon. The stuff, despite being a liquid, is strong- in alcohol content, taste, and constitution. You don’t drink it through a straw. You get hit in the nose with the alcohol and the caramel and the sweetness (or perhaps the peat, if you are into Islay). It has a beautiful color. It is special. When you drink whiskey you want a special glass- with weight and clarity and beauty.

Over the years we have struggled to find really nice barware for whisk(e)y drinkers. As soon as we find a good glass it seems to disappear from the market. And honestly, I’m not one to drink from those fancy schmancy narrowed Scotch glasses or a silly Cognac glass. I want a good fit in my hand.

Enter this barware from Thomas Jenkins.

The series is crystal. Clear. You see the whiskey. The glasses are wide and have heft. Most interestingly, the glasses have a gear profile on the base- allowing not only for a larger ‘feel’, but also a decidedly masculine touch. Plus the glasses’ ‘gears’ mesh together perfectly.

According to the designer: (I) took inspiration from both artisan hand cut crystal and mechanised gear cutting techniques. The glasses have a look and feel that compliments the technique and tradition of single malt whiskey distillers. Each pair of glasses has a opposing helical gear profile cut into it so they mesh perfectly together. The series takes its name from the engineering term for the gear size used.

And there’s a beautiful carafe to match.
