  • Piani LED Desk Lamp by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Flos

The Bouroullec Brothers

The Bouroullec brothers, Ronan (1971) and Erwan (1976), are one of those unique animals in the design world- family members that not only work together, but also complement and thrive each other. First ‘discovered’ by Giulio Cappellini, the duo has designed numerous objects for such diverse clients as Vitra, Cappellini, Magis, Alessi, and Established & Sons (incidentally, all available at Unicahome).

Their designs present a direct approach to function with overall simplicity in mind. Perhaps most notable of their designs is their early design for Vitra, the Joyn Office System. Designed to be a general workspace, the Joyn system was developed with collaboration in mind. Consisting of long tables perched on minimal appearing leg supports, the Joyn allowed partitioning through movable units, as well as electric, computer, and lighting conduits running through the center. The brothers realized that a desk, when reduced to a primary functional unit is just a planar surface. Allow necessary data, lighting, etc in the center and the workspace expands and contracts as needed, revolving around the center. Emphasis is placed on the interaction between parties- with the addition of small partitions privacy (or additional organization) may be added. (The image above, incidentally, is of the most recent Joyn System, with the center console removed. Numerous design changes have occurred in the last decade.  Sorry. Don’t worry, it’s still cool.)

Piani Desk Lamp by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Flos of Italy

Recently the brothers introduced a new desk/table lamp for Flos of Italy. Named the Piani (‘plans’ in Italian) the lamp utilizes 36 white LEDS perched on a low platform. The lamp provides direct lighting while also allowing a necessary organizational aspect the the tabletop.

Made primarily of durable ABS in green, red, white and black, the lamp is reasonably priced at $296. This price is notable simply because LEDs and LED lighting are becoming more and more inexpensive as they become more integrated into the design world. The retail price, incidentally, is increasing in April, 2012. (That means get one now)

The Centre Pompidou Metz is currently hosting the exhibition “Bivouac” (until July 2012) and the Vitra Design Museum is hosting “Album” (until May 28th).

Okay, we get it. They do good stuff.
