The Dressed Collection by Marcel Wanders for Alessi
My mother always wanted me to be well-dressed. In the South I always assumed that meant seersucker in summer and wool (or wool blends) in the winter.
To Marcel Wanders, ‘Dressed’ means something entirely different.
Wanders started off his career primarily with Droog Design, where he produced conceptual pieces such as the condom vase (a porcelain vase molded from a condom stuffed with eggs). He then went through the short-lived Wanders Wonders, which kind of morphed into Moooi. And worked with a ton of different manufacturers, receiving fame, fortune and everything that goes.
In the past few years Wanders has put emphasis on decor; sometimes mixed with surprise. His Skygarden lamp for Flos, for example, has a basic exterior, but the interior is molded in a style that, I suppose, can be considered Neo-Baroque. We sell the Skygarden lamp, and I think it is pretty cool. Wanders has developed an interesting blend of old and new- perhaps for people who want something antique-y or for folks who want something modern but don’t realize it yet. The cool and fabulous folks have understood the design all along, of course.

Wanders has pursued decor as design with a passion. It is prevalent in most of his recent works. ’Too much is not enough’ may be a good mantra for this production under some circumstances.
There is, however, an upside.
Dressed Dinnerware
The Alessi Dressed Collection by Wanders consists of dinnerware, glassware, and cutlery. Once again, Wanders has designed items that would fare equally well in a traditional or modern setting- but there is the continuation of the aspect of surprise- via texture. Plates and cutlery have relief decoration- also allowing an additional plus of light play and, in the case of cutlery, feel. And the texture on the cutlery is on the obverse. So it is a surprise.
And perfectly suited for daily or special occasion use.

Pretty nifty. Dinner becomes playtime for adults. Bowtie optional. It’s fall. Wear wool.
Recently Wanders and Alessi expanded the collection with the introduction of Dressed pots and pans. The catch? Decorated lids- and bases. And the grill has a decorated cooking surface, too.
No one has to know how cool your cookware is when you are making din-din. It will be our secret.
