Laguiole is a town in central France whose name is synonymous with high-quality knives. The ‘Laguiole’ knife is specifically a pocket knife with a trademark bee or fly symbol. The original knife (the capuchadou) was thought to be designed circa 1829 by Pierre-Jean Calmels. Additional accessories such as an awl and corkscrew were added over the next few decades. Although Laguiole knives are still produced in the Laguiole-Thiers area of France, the name ‘Laguiole’ refers to the knife itself, and Laguiole-style knives are manufactured worldwide, with a number of manufacturers of varying quality within France itself. The handles of the better-quality knives tend to be of horn or exotic woods.
Laguiole also produces a popular “Sommelier’s” corkscrew.
Within the last decade or so noted French designers such as Philippe Starck, Christian Ghion and Andree Putman began to re-design the knives and introduce their national legacy to a new generation of users.
Recently other designers such as Ora Ito have developed new designs, and new materials such as carbon graphite and acrylic have been added to the collection. Laguiole now produces table cutlery (including knives) and tools such as cigar cutters, golf knives, and pie servers (Matali Crasset).
Limited stock of the knives are available in the United States. The production is still done primarily by hand and to order.
