Smith & Smith by Enzo Mari: The World’s Most Beautiful Kitchen Tools
Originally designed by Enzo Mari in 1987, the Smith & Smith kitchen tool series have remained (in our minds) as the ultimate in culinary tools with a winning combination of stunning beauty and function.
Enzo Mari is often referred to as a ‘designer’s designer.’ Most of the brand name designers we can rattle off work on a specific aesthetic in their work. Form and colorway become the methodology of their brand. One could argue that such selfish intent takes away from the true art of the designer. Mari’s process is completely different, starting with fundamentals of form and function. What is the function of the design? What are the problems that need to be addressed in previous designs? His designs have an apparent unique quality when compared to one another. Perhaps that is the one descriptor that ties Mari’s work to the man.
The Smith & Smith line is notable for the details: the handles, the unique ‘turn’ of the attachment point on the cutting boards, etc. The line is designed to be hung in the kitchen for quick usage; it also can be easily stored away. More importantly, the line is beautiful and graceful enough to be used on the table or decorating the kitchen wall until the next use.
The manufacturer has more recently introduced a black series with an applied non-stick coating. The form is more emphasized with the black, take a look:
