Designed by Alexander Girard beginning in 1963, the wooden dolls were actually made by Girard for his own home in Santa Fe. Part toy and part popular art, the dolls are for older children’s use only with instruction. Based on originals found in the Girard estate held by the Vitra Design Museum, the partly joyful, partly grim-looking company of whimsical characters is now finished with the final installment of these 6.
Alongside Charles and Ray Eames as well as George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the decisive figures in post-war American design. The focus of his broad oeuvre was on textile design, and a key source of inspiration for him was his passion for the popular art of south America, Asia and East Europe.
The full collection of wooden dolls by Alexander Girard may be found here.
We are hoping for delivery by Christmas of the new doll introductions. We cannot make promises, unfortunately. Too many variables. First come, first served.
