The Second Edition (New and Improved!) of Eating Las Vegas: The Top 50 Restaurants is being released tonight at an exclusive party at Guy Savoy, Caesars Palace.

Overall a rather predictable assortment. The Cosmopolitan definitely has a great presence in the top 50, as well as many more local restaurants.

  1. In Defense of an Opinion: A predictable assortment is merely that. When you can name a basic list of Vegas restaurants of haute cuisine to make the top 10 it is a very simple process. Robuchon, Guy Savoy, Gagnaire- these fellows have more cred, experience, and quality to even attempt an argument. You have 4 out of the top 10 there alone. Restaurants are not always haute cuisine, however. What has been disregarded by the three amigos is the fact that there have been a number of local restaurants (granted top 50) who have been quietly making waves in the eating community here in Las Vegas. Raku is one of them. Sen of Japan is another. Lotus of Siam is another. Although all of these restaurants are excellent and top shelf (argument, Curtas?), the trio still insists on a focus on French Cuisine and Steakhouse that is most certainly top heavy. Milos would be the exception, and no one can throw stones at that choice.
    Las Vegas is in the process of developing into a city with its own style and cuisine. As more and more chefs from the Strip take their training and build their own futures it is the responsibility of the threesome to work without blinders or snobbery. In the end, if we assume the quality of the cuisine is excellent, then the judgement is on service and ambience. Yes, ambience is an important aspect of Strip dining, but it would be almost impossible for any local restaurant to approximate those Strip buildouts- financially those numbers do not make sense on any business plan outside of having a few million tourists marching outside of their doors. Our job as locals is to ensure that worthy joints succeed and spend our eatin’ money on the Strip AND in the local community.
    I’m thankful for the addenda in the back of Eating Las Vegas. There are a lot of gems in there, including a few insights into some wonderful restaurants that got nixed over some spat or another. Check it out.
