  • Three Wines from Khourys by Max Jacobson

I must confess I have been remiss in my duties as a wine writer and enthusiast in having let Khoury’s Fine Wines & Spirits slip through my fingers for such a long time. Proprietor Issa Khoury is from Elko, of all places, and his two well stocked shops, one at 9915 S. Eastern Ave in Henderson, the other at 7150 S. Durango Dr., both have a big selection of excellent wines culled from all twenty local distributors.

Khoury also stocks vintage Cognacs, rare Scotches, and other notable libations. Here are three wines currently on sale in his stores; all three are worth the trip, and a bargain in their own right.  All are under $30.

1998 Neitea Toscana Rosso, Italy.

I had never heard of the producer, Tenuta Marmoria, before tasting this wine, but the name pays homage to the Tuscan marble quarries near which the wine is produced. This is one of those so-called Super Tuscans, usually a blend of Sangiovese, the Chianti grape, and one of the more popular Bordeaux varietals, here Cabernet Sauvignon. I like it with lasagna or sausage. It’s smoky, earthy and nicely balanced.

2006 Bridesmaid Red, Oakville, Calif.

By contrast, this wine, also a blend, couldn’t be more different, a hot wine that is 14.9 % alcohol by volume, from a new Napa Valley star. I have long enjoyed wines made by this team, which includes a Crocker & Starr winemaker and also Drew Neiman, who makes the fabulously expensive Kongsgaard, at five times this price. It’s a blend of Merlot, a small amount of Syrah, and the ever present Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is concentrated, heavily extracted and rich with dark fruit.

Marie Weiss NV Brut, Ludes, France

Finally, since it’s so hot, we thought you might like to cool down with some affordable bubbles, a fairly classic, yeasty version of Champagne from the motherland. This baby is just reaching full maturity, as it was disgorged in Oct. ’08. Still, it’s creamy, round and satisfying, reminding us of that famous dictum, “he who says no to Champagne, also says no to life.”
