Normally, I don’t pay attention to hype, and I often ignore the dozens of media requests I get every week. So I passed on the opening of an ice cream place called Atomic #7, dismissing it as just one more shake shack. Why Atomic #7, as opposed to Atomic #1, as this is an original concept? It’s the number for nitrogen, on the Periodic Table.
Well, it turns out, I was wrong. This is one concept worth checking out, and in the long run, one that may actually have legs. It is the idea of two women from the entertainment industry, Rachelle Fournier, who works as a dancer, and Ginger Corbett, formerly a lighting designer, both of whom work their small business in Henderson’s Galleria Mall complex.
It’s a small storefront next to a Panera Bread franchise, so if you look in the Food Court in this mall, as I did, you won’t find it. When you walk in, you’ll see what looks like any other ice cream place, a few tables, a counter, and a cash register, but one thing is missing; the ice cream.
This is because it is frozen to order, with liquid nitrogen from cylinders located just below the counter. First, choose a size. There is a Neutron Scoop, about four ounces, a Super Nova Scoop, eight ounces, or a pint.
Then proceed to the Flavor Your World section, where you can choose as many flavors as you like from a long list, including stuff like peanut butter, chai, bananas Foster, and many eccentric choices.
The next step is to choose the base, cream, soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, lactose free two percent milk, or fat free yogurt. Then, if you so choose, you can add in elements at an extra charge, things like cookie dough, bubble gum or fresh fruit. But this isn’t Steve’s, or Cold Stone Creamery. The next step is strictly twenty-first century.
One of the two partners then freezes your ingredients in a mixing bowl before your eyes. You can then top the entire concoction off with whip cream, organic fruit sauces, sprinkles, or a Penguin Coat. You can also choose your vessel, an eco friendly dessert cup, or a choice of either a gluten free or regular waffle cone. Talk about vegan friendly.
There are eccentric smoothies as well. Their signature smoothie, Atomic Amazon ™, is a 24 oz. drink made with 18 ingredients such as acai, goji, mangosteen, chia seeds, hibiscus, B-12, agave, cinnamon, and several fruits. Corbett has one every morning for breakfast.
