Cocktail Chic at Fleming’s

Fleming’s Steak House has long been my favorite off-Strip steak joint, even though I’m clear on the other side of town. They have a terrific by-the-glass wine program, because owner Paul Fleming, the PF of P.F. Chang’s, is a huge wine geek, and his wife, Kelly, is a top wine producer. And the food is solid and innovative. I just love to eat there.

Now, there is a sleek bar menu to go along with first-rate cocktails such as their Blood Orange Fizz, tangy Margarita and Modern Martini list, highlighted by my fave here, their Ginger Tequini made with Gran Centenario Anejo, Canton Ginger liqueur and lime sour. These dishes, priced between $9 and $16, are only served in the bar. I tasted them at a media cocktail party, everything except a Prime burger and Fleming’s Original Prime rib melt, which comes with Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms and horseradish slaw.

House Made Burrata

The apps were brought out on trays; first, house made burrata served as a bruschetta with charred grape tomatoes and arugula, then a delicious cedar roasted mushroom flat bread, topped with lots of Christopher Ranch garlic and artichoke.

Salt and pepper shrimp turns out to be more like an Italian fritto misto. The light, crisply battered shrimp come with battered green beans and lemon slices, an acquired taste. If you want meat, filet mignon flat bread with Danish Blue and Monterey Jack cheeses has to be the best value. The dish is crazy good. I didn’t linger long enough to try their Prime steakhouse meatballs, but a colleague informed me that they had nice density but could have used more flavor.

Still and all, Fleming’s continues to be a pleaser, and when I’m on this side of town, and feel like a martini and some light appetizers, I know just where to go.
